Engineering Ministries International (EMI) provides free architectural and engineering design services to missionaries working in developing countries, who are preaching the gospel and ministering to the poor. EMI does this by leading short-term mission trips for design professionals (teams of architects, engineers, and surveyors) to design projects all over the world such as hospitals, orphanages, schools, water systems, and churches. EMI has 2 offices in North America and 5 offices overseas. Since it’s inception in 1982, EMI has designed over 1000 projects in over 90 countries. Last year alone, EMI donated more than $5,000,000 in design services for projects around the globe.
Henry and Erika Watts have been on staff with EMI at their headquarters office in Colorado Springs for the past 8 years. Erika is a native of State College and grew up attending Calvary with her family. The Watts are uniquely suited to the ministry of EMI because Erika is a landscape architect and Henry is a structural engineer, with most of his work experience in construction management.
In November 2011, Henry was named the Director of EMI's U.S. office in Colorado Springs - overseeing all of the staff in the office (18 people), as well as the finance, publications, and HR departments. He also currently serves as the Design Manager, overseeing all of the design work at EMI. Even in the midst of these responsibilities, he continues to be a trip leader, traveling 2-3 times per year to design projects around the world. Getting to see God at work first hand through the ministries EMI serves is such a joy!
The Watts family spent the majority of 2008 in Amman, Jordan working with the Jordan Evangelical Theological Seminary (JETS), helping to construct their new campus. Since 2009, Erika has transitioned to staying home with their three children – Owen (5), Claire (2), and Jordan (6 months). Previously, her role at EMI was to co-lead trips, provide master planning and landscape architectural design for projects in the office, and to work on publications, especially EMI's monthly design newsletter.
Over the years Henry and Erika have been privileged to get to share at Calvary and at Penn State about their work with EMI, and have now had over 5 EMI interns from Penn State, the majority of whom have attended Calvary. They have also had 3 other Calvary members join them on EMI mission trips. What a fun blessing!
